Experiences from watch owners
"I brought in a vintage Swiss manual-wind that had been running about two minutes fast per day for years. Reza looked at it properly, explained what was likely happening with the escapement, and gave me a clear idea of cost before any work was done. Six weeks later it was back, running within about five seconds a day. Straightforward and honest."

"The hairspring adjustment service was recommended to me after another shop said the watch just needed a full overhaul. I wasn't convinced the full overhaul was warranted yet. Jewel Bearing assessed it separately, agreed that a targeted adjustment was the right approach, and the result has been consistent across positions — something that wasn't the case before."

"Sent a Japanese automatic in for cleaning — it was sluggish on power reserve and occasionally stopping on the wrist. Communication throughout was good; they told me when the work was starting and updated me when it was ready. The watch came back with a written note about what was found. That kind of transparency is not always common."

"My grandfather's watch had not been serviced in many years. I wasn't sure what was needed and the initial consultation helped me understand the options clearly. They recommended starting with the cleaning rather than jumping to a full escapement service. The watch came back running. Sometimes the simpler approach is the right one."

"I was initially unsure about whether the price was reasonable for what was a relatively old movement. After the service, I understood better why the work takes the time it does. The timing report was useful — I could see what the machine was reading across positions before and after. I'll be returning when the watch is due for cleaning again."

"Dropped off a dress watch that had been sitting unworn for several years. It needed cleaning and basic regulation. The staff at drop-off were knowledgeable without being condescending, and they did not try to oversell a more expensive service. The watch was returned on schedule and has been performing well since."

Service case studies
A closer look at what the process involved in three representative services.
Case Study 01 — Escapement Service
1960s Swiss manual-wind, consistently gaining 3–4 minutes per day
CHALLENGE
The owner had noticed the watch gaining consistently, with the rate worsening over two years. The watch had not been serviced in over 15 years. Amplitude was noticeably low on the wrist.
APPROACH
Following consultation, an escapement service was agreed. On inspection, the pallet jewels showed wear and the end-shake on the escape wheel pivot was outside acceptable range. Both were addressed. Beat error was corrected.
OUTCOME
The watch returned gaining approximately 8 seconds per day — well within tolerance for its age and caliber. The owner reported consistent performance over the following month. Duration: 4 weeks.
Case Study 02 — Hairspring Adjustment
Modern automatic, large positional variance between dial-up and crown-down
CHALLENGE
A well-maintained watch that had been serviced two years prior began showing significant positional variance — about 35 seconds per day between the best and worst positions. The owner had timing machine data to share.
APPROACH
After reviewing the timing data and inspecting the movement, it was determined that the issue was isochronism-related rather than general wear. A standalone hairspring adjustment was proposed and agreed. No further disassembly was warranted.
OUTCOME
Positional variance reduced to 12 seconds across six positions — a meaningful improvement for the caliber involved. The targeted approach saved cost compared to a full overhaul. Duration: 2.5 weeks.
Case Study 03 — Movement Cleaning
Japanese automatic, stopping intermittently after years without service
CHALLENGE
The watch had not been serviced in approximately eight years and was stopping for short periods when left unworn. Power reserve appeared shorter than specified. No mechanical damage was suspected.
APPROACH
A cleaning and lubrication service was appropriate — the movement was otherwise in good mechanical health. Ultrasonic cleaning of all parts, correct oils applied at each bearing and pivot, reassembly and regulation.
OUTCOME
Full power reserve restored. Intermittent stopping resolved. The watch has been running without issue for the owner. The cleaning service was the correct intervention — no escapement or hairspring work was needed. Duration: 3 weeks.
